Chapter 27

Three days passed before he was able to sneak out of the citadel and back down to Dock City at night—a combination of a court dinner he hadn’t been able to avoid and Theac’s obsessive watchfulness in Talyn’s absence—and by then the house he’d followed the Vengeance member to was empty.

After searching the place from top to bottom, cloaked in shadow, and finding nothing but old, dusty furniture, he’d sworn long and fluently for several minutes. Either they’d somehow known they’d been followed, or they regularly moved locations.

Either way—the lead was lost.

He soaked in the bitter disappointment of that for two more days before word came that a cargo ship from Montagn carrying supplies of fresh vegetables had docked.

Directly west across the wide channel between the southern tip of Mithranar and the east coast of Montagn sat the massive port of Acleu. To this port came the produce from the fertile southwestern farming region of Montagn to be shipped offshore.

Mithranar received the majority of its produce from Acleu, particularly during the hottest summer months when the heat and humidity were too oppressive for anything other than a handful of tropical fruits to grow—and naturally these were hoarded by the winged folk. Even the gardens higher up in the citadel struggled. Montagn knew it, and the prices for vegetables during summer always rose sharply.

The Queencouncil, never ones to spend when they didn’t need to, ensured enough supplies came in to feed the citadel and palace, with just enough left over for the wealthier market and shop owners in Dock City to purchase.

But with Montagn charging more during summer, the merchants in Dock City had to charge more too, and for a limited supply.

As always, the poor missed out.

Summer wasn’t just oppressively hot and sticky in Dock City. It was also a time when illness ran rampant with rats, mosquitoes and fleas thriving throughout the poor areas where sanitation was almost non-existent. Having limited access to fresh fruit and vegetables, the humans succumbed quickly. Meanwhile, the Acondor family, along with most of their court, retreated to the SkyReach and the Summer Palace to escape the hottest months.

So as far as the Shadowhawk was concerned, the palace certainly wouldn’t need the supplies that had just arrived.

Navis’s message arrived barely a full-turn after the ship’s arrival to let him know where the supplies were being moved to—uncharacteristically quick, but for good reason. Even more fortunate, Cuinn was down in Dock City to receive the message, having managed to sneak away from the Wolves earlier in the evening than usual.

If the Shadowhawk wanted to steal the supplies for Dock City, he had a single night to get it done. The vegetables would spoil quickly. And Navis’s message warned that the Falcons planned to start moving the produce up to the citadel the following morning.

Petro, emptying trash into a large bin in the alley out the back of his café after closing up for the day, didn’t look surprised to see the Shadowhawk appear from the shadows.
